Astana is the capital of Kazakhstan. Known until 1998 as Aqmola, it was renamed in 2019 to Nur-Sultan, but was renamed again to its previous name, Astana, in 2022.
It is located along the Ishim River in the north of the country, in the Aqmola region, although it is administered separately as an independent entity.
