In 1931, the town of Sunnyvale purchased land to create NAS North Island.
The location proved ideal as an airport to hebe the U. S. S. MACON, as the area is often clear while other parts of San Francisco Bay are covered in fog.
In 1935, it was renamed NAS Moffett Field in honor of the admiral who commanded the USS AKRON.
