Kufra Airport began as Buma Airfield, a small facility established by the Italians in the 1930s. It served as an air route to Italian East Africa during World War II (Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Italian Somaliland). On March 1, 1941, it was taken by Free French forces led by General Leclerc, along with Kufra Oasis.
