The goal of LZIB Bratislava project was to create the most reliable scenery of M. R. Stefanik Airport in the Capital of Slovak Republic. With an eye for detail, this airport was created on the basis of photo documentation, on the basis of satellite images and accurate information from the AIP SR airport maps (july 2026). So, the airport was created from the most up-to-date data available at the time of creation. The beginnings of scheduled air transport in Bratislava and the surrounding area are linked to the first Czechoslovak Airlines route from Prague to Bratislava in October 1923, when an Aero A-14 biplane landed at Vajnory with a single passenger on board. As it became evident in the post-war period that the proximity of the Little Carpathians mountain range would limit the development of air traffic at Vajnory Airport, construction of Slovakia's largest airport began in 1947 within the cadastral territory of the village of Ivanka pri Dunaji. The history of the current M. R. Štefánik Airport dates back to that year. The first phase of airport construction involved building runway 04–22 and the perpendicular runway 13–31; these continue to enable aircraft to land in Bratislava in almost all weather conditions. The rapidly evolving aircraft fleet and rising demands regarding passenger and cargo transport, as well as ground support facilities, necessitated ongoing investment. A departure terminal was built during the second phase of construction. At the same time, the apron area was expanded, and facilities were added to meet the needs of the Ministry of the Interior's Air Wing. During the 1980s, as part of a comprehensive reconstruction of the runway system, Runway 04–22 was extended to 2,900 meters (from the original 1,900 m) and Runway 13–31 to 3,190 meters (from the original 1,500 m). The goal of the airport's third construction phase in the 1990s was to vertically separate arriving and departing passenger flows; consequently, a terminal for arriving passengers was completed in 1994. In 1995, a new, modern fire station was built at the intersection of the runways. Two years later, the reconstruction of the lighting and navigation aid systems for Runway 13–31 was completed, and new aviation fuel storage facilities—along with a railway spur from the Podunajské Biskupice station—became part of the airport infrastructure. A new control tower, currently operated by LPS SR, š. p. , was put into service in 1998. Preparations for Bratislava Airport’s entry into the Schengen Area (air travel) reached their peak in 2007 and 2008. The departure terminal was divided into two sections: Section A, designated for passengers flying to Schengen countries (requiring no passport control) following the airport's official entry into the Schengen Area, and Section B, intended for passengers traveling to destinations outside the zone. The overall appearance of the passenger terminal building from the airside was altered by the addition of boarding bridges in 2007. The key project of 2009 and 2010 was the construction of a new terminal, which was completed in June 2012. From the outset, the project was divided into two phases and carried out while the airport remained fully operational. The first phase—the construction of the departure terminal—was finished after 16 months of intensive work, and the terminal was officially opened on June 9, 2010. Towards the end of the year, the gradual demolition of the original departure terminal began; the second section of the new terminal building was subsequently erected on that site over the next two years. Currently, the airport is undergoing changes such as a reconfiguration of aircraft stands and an increase in flights to various European and exotic destinations.
