The airport takes its name from the hero of independence Benito Salas Vargas, whose body is believed to have been buried on the La Manguita hacienda, the place where the airport was built. Due to regional interest and the National Government, it was decided to build the airport in Neiva, uniting the lands of the "La Manguita" farm owned by Bertha Borrero de Valenzuela, with those of Abacú Lozano, known by the name of "La Cucaracha", and others belonging to Silvestre Falla Borrero, thus completing 130 hectares.
The airport is located within the urban area of Neiva in the urban core of the city, being surrounded by communes 1 and 2, about 3 km from the city center, the distance by car is approximately 10 minutes on average, although this time may increase during peak periods. It currently has:
