Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is a unique and historically significant site located in Essex, England. Perched on a small rise overlooking the small village and civil parish of Stow Maries, this aerodrome holds a special place in aviation history as one of the few remaining First World War aerodromes that are still operational today.
Originally established in 1916 during the First World War, Stow Maries Aerodrome played a crucial role in the defense of London against German air raids. It served as a home for Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and later Royal Air Force (RAF) squadrons, housing both pilots and ground crew. The aerodrome was strategically positioned to intercept and engage enemy aircraft on their way to bomb London.
One of the remarkable features of Stow Maries is its well-preserved collection of First World War-era buildings, including hangars, officer’s mess, and other support structures. These buildings offer visitors a tangible connection to the past, allowing them to step back in time and experience the life of those who served during the Great War.
The aerodrome has undergone extensive restoration efforts to bring it back to its original condition, providing an authentic glimpse into the history of early aviation. Visitors can explore the various exhibits, displays, and aircraft on-site, gaining insights into the challenges faced by aviators during First World War.
Stow Maries Aerodrome not only serves as a museum and historical site but also hosts events, air shows, and educational programs throughout the year. These activities aim to preserve and share the rich aviation heritage while honouring the contributions of those who served at this important airfield.
For aviation enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone interested in the legacy of early air warfare, Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome offers a captivating and immersive experience that brings the past to life. It stands as a testament to the bravery and ingenuity of the individuals who played a vital role in shaping the course of aviation history during a pivotal period in the 20th century.

Alaska Airlines operates daily Boeing 737-700 passenger and Boeing 737-700 passenger/cargo jet service from the airport.

During the peak of military activity in Yakutat from October 1940 to 1946, U. S. Army and U. S. Army Air Corps constructed the Yakutat airport, fuel dock and fuel tank farm, and a fuel pipeline to the airport with tankage. Also constructed was a full field hospital, possible beach landing defenses, over 100 miles of roads and bridges to connect all of the various field facilities and housing for the nearly 10,000 troops who were stationed in Yakutat to support and protect the airport.
Nowadays Yakutat Airport is a state-owned public-use airport located 6 km southeast of the central business district of Yakutat, a city and borough in the U. S. state of Alaska which has no road access to the outside world.
Only Alaska Airlines Boeing 737-700 use this airport for commercial flights. Also, a lot of general aviation arrives during all seasons. People come here to enjoy exciting views and to catch fish in the wild rivers of Alaska.

Subsequently, Wickenby became home to both 12 and 626 squadrons, which initially operated Vickers Wellingtons before transitioning to the iconic Avro Lancasters.
With the conclusion of World War II, Wickenby Airfield’s role shifted. It was briefly used for post-war trials of jet aircraft before being decommissioned by the RAF in 1956. At this point, the airfield transitioned into private ownership. In the decades that followed, Wickenby Airfield underwent a renaissance. The airfield found new life as a hub for general aviation, flying clubs, and vintage aircraft enthusiasts. A passionate community of aviation enthusiasts and historians worked tirelessly to preserve its wartime heritage.
Numerous vintage aircraft, including iconic Spitfires and Hurricanes, were restored to their former glory on the airfield’s grounds. The Wickenby Museum, established in 1987, became a custodian of the airfield’s history, housing an extensive collection of artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia that chronicle its wartime and post-war eras.
Today, Wickenby Airfield is a thriving testament to the enduring legacy of aviation. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and immerse themselves in its rich history. Vintage aircraft still grace its runways, and the airfield hosts fly-in events, airshows, and flight experiences that continue to captivate aviation enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
