General information: El Calafate "Comandante Armando Tola" International Airport, (IATA: FTE - ICAO: SAWC - FAA: ECA) is an airport serving the city of El Calafate, in the province of Santa Cruz, Argentina. The airport is located 23 km from the city center.
It has a single track of 2,550 x 45 m and a terminus of 2,800 m². The airport was built by the Government of the Province of Santa Cruz in two stages:
Runway, Platform, Taxiway and Access Road: through the General Administration of Provincial Highways (AGVP), public tender awarded to the companies Esuco SA - Decavial SA UTE, start date: October 1997. In 2016 it received about 12 daily flights and together with the new SAMIC Hospital in El Calafate inaugurated in 2015, the airport has improved its category. The terminal was designed by Carlos Ott, a Canadian nationalized Uruguayan architect, who was also responsible for the passenger terminal at the International Airport of Ushuaia and Punta del Este - Uruguay. For this reason, the terminals have similar characteristics: a rich stone design and cantilevered roof plans, appropriate to the climatic characteristics of the area.
El Calafate International Airport is an important means of access for tourists visiting Los Glaciares National Park.
