The "Flying Barrel" was not to see combat, being superceded by the new generation of monoplane ship-board fighters, the Grumman F4F Wildcat around the time of the attack on Pearl Harbour.
In 1936, a special Grumman F3F-1 was built by the factory for Major Alford “ Al” Williams, head of aviation for Gulf Oil Company and well-known aerobatic display pilot. The aeroplane was flown as a demonstrator for Gulf Oil (and Grumman) and appeared at air-shows and military displays all over the U. S. before WW2.
Called “Gulfhawk II” and powered by a 1000hp version of the Cyclone, the aeroplane displayed its aerobatic capabilities, speed and strength to great effect. So much so that the airframe was not retired until 1948 when Williams flew it on its final flight to Washington, after which it was to take its rightful place in the now Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Gulfhawk II is included in this package and would make an ideal starter for the Reno Races!

Grumman G-44A Widgeon On Sale
The G-44A is an American high-wing, twin-engine, amphibious light aircraft produced by the Grumman Aerospace Corporation. nnIn the late 1930s, Grumman envisioned a smaller version of its G-21 Goose, which had proven successful as a business transport aircraft. Called the Widgeon, the prototype of the aircraft first flew in July of 1940, intended for the civil market. World War II intervened, however, and the production aircraft entered service for the militaries of the United States and Britain.... Called the Widgeon, the prototype of the aircraft first flew in July of 1940, intended for the civil market. World War II intervened, however, and the production aircraft entered service for the militaries of the United States and Britain. At the end of the conflict, Grumman revisited the civilian concept for the airframe and released the G-44A Widgeon. The G-44A, with seating for six including the pilot, quickly became well-known as a reliable, durable machine eminently capable of operation from both land and water, notably in austere and remote areas like those of Alaska. nnThe Widgeon is driven by two wing-mounted Ranger 6-440-C5 six-cylinder engines that each produce 200 horsepower. The airplane has a maximum speed of 160 miles per hour, a climb rate of 1,750 feet per minute, and a ceiling of 18,000 feet above sea level. nnA classic gem in the history of aviation, the Grumman G-44A Widgeon allows pilots to access the sky from either land or water, and do so confidently. From inside the cockpit of the burly machine, aviators can launch into the heights from a modern airport, then touch down on a river deep in the backcountry, then leap again into the air from the shore. A go-anywhere craft, the Widgeon provides one of the rarest opportunities to be found in the world of aviation, one that combines piloting with exploration.

The Handley-Page Hampden was an aircraft that was very nearly obsolete when it went into service. One of the first British bombers to see service in World War, it carried a payload similar to the Wellington and Whitley, but was much faster and more maneuverable. It was the newest design of these three, sporting a very slender fuselage and fixed guns. It was indeed faster and more agile but the defensive armament was inadequate and was later updated. Known as the "Flying Suitcase" due to its narrow fuselage and cramped crew positions, the Hampden was nearly as fast as the Blenheim but carried 4 x the load twice as far. It was initially used in daylight raids until combat losses dictated an improvement in defensive armament as well as a switch to night ops. At night, the Hampden continued with success in raids on Germany and particiapted in the first "1,000 bomber" raid before being withdrawn in 1942.

... A legendary fighter reborn for the next generation of flight simulation
Step into the transonic era with an exceptional recreation of the Hawker Hunter Mk. 58, one of the most iconic military aircraft of the 1950s and 60s. Developed exclusively for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, this add-on delivers an outstanding level of realism through meticulous 3D modelling, photorealistic 4K textures, a fully interactive cockpit, and a flight model validated by former Swiss Hunter pilots.
Designed for enthusiasts of precision flying, historical authenticity, and high-performance aircraft, the SwissMilSim Hunter Mk. 58 offers complete immersion—from taxi to high-speed transonic flight.
Historical Background – Hawker Hunter Mk. 58
A Milestone of 1950s Aviation
The Hawker Hunter Mk. 58 represents the dawn of a new generation of jet fighters. Powered by the compact and powerful Rolls-Royce Avon axial-flow turbojet, it achieved an excellent thrust-to-weight ratio. Combined with a 35° swept wing and an all-moving tailplane optimised for transonic flight, the Hunter delivered remarkable performance—setting a world speed record of 1,171 km/h in 1953.
Entering service in 1954 and produced in nearly 2,000 units, it earned a reputation for robustness, agility and versatility. Operated by around twenty nations, the Hunter served as an interceptor, ground-attack aircraft, reconnaissance platform and two-seat trainer. It famously equipped the Black Arrows, the legendary RAF aerobatic team.
The Hunter in Switzerland
Switzerland introduced the Hunter in 1958, initially as the Mk. 6 before upgrading to the Swiss-specific Mk. 58.
A total of 160 aircraft were operated, including several two-seat variants. Armed with four 30 mm cannons and compatible with AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles and a variety of air-to-ground stores, the Swiss Hunter performed air defence, surveillance and ground-support missions for 36 years.
A major modernisation in the 1980s extended its service life until 1994. The aircraft also became the founding platform of the Patrouille Suisse, created in 1964.
A Living Legacy
Today, 72 Hunters remain airworthy worldwide, mostly with civilian operators, while around fifty others are displayed in museums. In Switzerland, approximately thirty aircraft are still preserved or visible.
Comparable to the Dassault Mystère IV, F-86 Sabre or MiG-17, the Hawker Hunter Mk. 58 remains a defining symbol of the transition into the transonic era.
