burning blue design
Burning Blue Design was set up with one purpose, to create outstanding Microsoft Flight Simulator scenery.
We have a passion for the airports and airfields we create and our designs all have a personal touch. We want them to feel real, lived in and working, so you can smell the AvGas and feel the wind rushing down the runway.

Fairoaks Airport
Located southwest of London between Chobham and Chertsey in Surrey, Fairoaks is a general aviation airport operated by Fairoaks Operations Ltd.
Fairoaks opened as a private airstrip in 1931, but was used by the military from 1936 and became RAF Fairoaks during World War II. Fairoaks opened as a private airstrip in 1931, but was used by the military from 1936 and became RAF Fairoaks during World War II. It was used as a training airfield, with No. 18 Elementary & Reserve Flying School equipped with De Havilland Tiger Moths. 6,000 pilots were trained at the airfield. In 1968 the Alan Mann Group took control of the airfield, later constructing the hard runway in 1979.
In 2015, it was announced that the airport would be closed to build a 1,500 unit housing development to be known as “Fairoaks Garden Village”. This has resulted in a years-long battle to save this historic airport. On 15 February 2022, the original control tower was decommissioned, being replaced by a temporary control room provided by Helipad Aviation Services located adjacent to taxiway B. Recent works to the west side of the airport, have also put taxiway A out of action.
Fairoaks Airport has been accurately recreated by Burning Blue Design’s modellers and coders with on-site visits, and features:
- Over 80 custom 3D objects have been created exclusively for Fairoaks airport, each with full Physical Based Rendering (PBR) textures.
- Based on 2022 visits to Fairoaks.
- Includes new ‘temporary’ control tower adjacent to taxiway B.
- High resolution colour corrected ground textures.
- Working custom Windsocks.
- Open hangar parking and café interiors.
- Two Isuzu TACR3 Fire Trucks with realistic liveries.
- Also included is ‘Firebird 3’, in honour of the retired Ford F-150 which was based at Fairoaks until 2019.
- Dynamic scenery and lighting, which change realistically depending on the time of day and weather.
- Correct Tower frequency, AI pattern procedures and accurate taxiway placement. (Taxiway A has been left active to reflect a fully operational airport)
- McLaren Technology Centre and Production Centre POI.

Burning Blue Designs is exceptionally proud to present our largest and most detailed project by far, Farnborough Airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator. The team at Burning Blue Designs has grown, and so has our scope, and we are extremely confident in saying that Farnborough is the most detailed Airport as yet released by any developer for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Farnborough has perhaps the richest history of any airport in the United Kingdom, and boasts a significant history dating back to 1908 when Samuel Franklin Cody, a Wild West showman accomplished the feat of the first powered, controlled and sustained flight in the United Kingdom. Cody’s audacious endeavour granted Farnborough the illustrious title, ‘The birthplace of British Aviation’
The Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) was created at Farnborough a year after Cody’s flight in 1909 and was where aircraft designers such as Geoffrey de Havilland and Henry Folland found fame, and over the course of more than fifty years designed, the RAE built and tested hundreds of aircraft at the airport including the Harrier and Concorde.
Today Farnborough is renowned worldwide with it’s yearly airshow attracting over 80,000 visitors and hosting over 1500 exhibitors all viing for a business in the incredibly lucrative civil and military aviation sectors. During the rest of the year Farnborough sees over 30,000 business jet movements and is UK’s busiest and most prestigious business aviation hub, hosting a swathe of business jets companies.
Farnborough Airport has been recreated faithfully over many, many hundreds of hours by Burning Blue Design’s 3D modellers and coders and features:
- Over 90 custom 3D objects have been created exclusively for Farnborough Airport, each with full Physical Based Rendering (PBR) allowing for far more realistic textures.
- Over ten thousand carefully placed stock assets across the airport and surrounding area, every fence, parking space, cone, light and tree has been placed in it’s correct location bringing life to Farnborough airport and the surrounding area.
- As with all Burning Blue Design Products new custom working Windsocks have been created and accurately placed around the airport.
- High resolution colour corrected ground textures have been used as a basis for the airport, these have been taken from Bing maps and heavily manipulated for consistency and realism which far surpasses the quality of the stock Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 ground texture.
- New taxiways and roads have been created in and around the airport and the runway with it’s huge displaced threshold has been faithfully recreated.
- Full night lighting placed across the airport and surrounding area including individually placed street lights along the surrounding roads.
- Surrounding landmarks have been created and placed in their correct locations to improve visual navigation and general airport atmosphere, these include:
- The Wind Tunnel Project.
- Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre
- The Aviator Hotel
- The Gloster E28/39 monument to Sir Frank Whittle.
- Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum (FAST) with it’s assortment of display aircraft.

Also known as London Ashford Airport, and previously known as Lydd Ferryfield, Lydd International Airport has had a colourful history. The Airport was built exclusively for Silver City Airways after the Second World War and before the introduction of commercial hovercraft and cross channel ferries, Lydd Airport was the primary means of hopping the English channel to Le Touquet Airport in France, and the rest of Europe. Today, Lydd boasts a busy flying club, aerial tours and a number of cargo and cross channel charter companies.
Lydd sits on the Dungeness Peninsular in Southern Kent, the largest expanse of shingle beach in Europe and also the only true desert in Great Britain. The strong winds, lack of plant and animal life and harsh surroundings make Lydd a truly unique place to visit, and it sits in stark contrast to the lush greenery of the rest of the Kent countryside.
Lydd International Airport has been recreated faithfully over many hundreds of hours by Burning Blue Design’s modellers and coders and features:
- Over 40 custom 3D objects have been created exclusively for Lydd Airport, each with full Physical Based Rendering (PBR) allowing for far more realistic textures.
- The Bristow Her Majesty’s Coastguard Hangar at Lydd has been modelled accurately, both inside and out along with a compliment of HM Coastguard Sikorsky S-92 helicopters.
- There are thousands of carefully placed stock assets, every bush, road marking, crate and beacon, along with an assortment of ground workers has been placed in it’s correct location ensuring an atmosphere of a working airport.
- High resolution colour corrected ground textures taken from Bing maps and manipulated for consistency and realism which far surpasses the quality of the stock Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 ground texture.
- Correct AI pattern procedures and accurate taxiway and runway placement have been incorporated into the release.
- Surrounding landmarks have been created and placed in their correct locations to improve visual navigation, these include: Denge Marsh Water Tower, Dungeness A Power Station, Dungeness B Power Station, Dungeness Old Lighthouse, Dungeness New Lighthouse, Lydd Golf Club and The Denge Acoustic Mirrors.
- Shipping lanes in the English channel have been populated with container ships and tankers.
- Full night lighting placed across the aerodrome and within and around the hangars and terminal building.
- New waterways for the Dungeness Headland have been created, including the entirety of the Dengemarsh sewage system which has been remapped faithfully.
- New desert scrub Biome for the Dungeness Headland to reflect it’s status as the only true desert within Great Britain.

Popham Airfield
Situated along side the A303, just north of Winchester, Popham Airfield is home to the Spitfire Flying Club.

In the early 1970’s the land alongside the A303 was purchased by Jim Espin, a member of the Hampshire Strut of the Popular Flying Association. With the aid of fellow members of the Strut, the land was cleared, levelled, seeded and transformed into an airstrip. The original strip is now the 26/08 runway of the present airfield. In 1978, the airfield was purchased by Charles Church, an avid collector of Spitfires. A second runway was added and the airfield was expanded to include additional hangers.
Today, Popham Airfield welcomes over 10,000 visitors annually and is famous for hosting many events over the year, including the Microlight trade fair in May, the annual Motorcycle Mega Meet, Classic Car Show and Vintage Aircraft Fly-in in August and the New Year’s Day Fly-in.
It is also home to the world’s only “Ikarus C42 As” flight training simulator. This allows the Popham-based flight school, AirBourne Aviation (www. flyMAC. co. uk), to offer flight training to its students no matter the weather conditions. This makes AirBourne Aviation the UK’s ONLY all-weather flight school.
Popham Airfield has been painstakingly recreated by Burning Blue Design’s modellers and coders undertaking multiple on-site visits and flights. We have worked in collaboration with AirBourne Aviation to ensure the highest levels of accuracy. It features:
- Over 160 custom 3D objects have been created exclusively for Popham airfield, each with full Physical Based Rendering (PBR) allowing for extremely realistic textures.
- Thousands of carefully placed stock assets, every cone, car, sign and fence has been placed in it’s correct location ensuring an atmosphere of a working airfield.
- High resolution colour corrected ground textures taken from Bing maps and manipulated for consistency and realism which far surpasses the quality of the stock Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 ground texture.
- Working custom Signal Square, which accurately shows the most suitable runway for the wind conditions.
- Dynamic smoke effects, signs and car park, which change realistically depending on the time of day.
- New control tower built in 2020.
- Based on 2023 layout with over 30 new hangars
- Numerous custom aircraft have been added around Popham to enhance the realism and better reflect actual aircraft found at the airfield:
- Ikarus C42 (AirBourne Aviation school aircraft: G-CCYR and G-CDVI)
- Spitfire F Mk. Ia
- Yakovlev Yak-52 (G-YAKI and G-YAKX – both real aircraft based at Popham)
- Yakovlev Yak-12
- De Havilland Chipmunk
- Correct AI pattern procedures and accurate taxiway and runway placement have been incorporated into the airfield.
- Key navigational landmarks in the surrounding area have been included:
- White Arrow – used by pilots to line up on the offset approach to 26
- Water Tower
- Grain Silos at Micheldever
- Polytunnels – marking the downwind leg of the 08-26 circuit
- BP and Esso fuel stations
- Starbucks (A303 North and South)
- Popham MX Track
- Test Valley Golf Course
- In honour of the car and motorcycle events hosted at Popham, the car park includes:
- 1946 Vespa scooter
- 1955 Volkswagen Transporter ‘T1’
- 1963 Austin Mini
- 1970 Porsche 911
- 1990 Mazda MX-5 ‘Mk1’
- 2017 Yamaha YZF-R3

During World War II, it served as a training airfield, playing a vital role in preparing pilots for air combat. Post-war, Sandown transitioned into a hub for general aviation under the name ‘The Isle of Wight Airport’. By the early 1970’s, unfortunately, general aviation operations declined over the next few years and the airfield sadly closed. In 1976 it was acquired by new owners who reopened Sandown airport with the goal of it being a more attractive general aviation hub, and it has since flourished.
Today Sandown Airport is a hive of activity. It hosts numerous fly-ins, events, skydiving and gatherings that draw aviation enthusiasts from across the UK and beyond. The Wight Aviation Museum also sits onsite and helps visitors learn about the the Isle of Wight’s extensive aviation history. Sandown airport also prides itself with regular live music and a wide variety of food offerings which all contribute to why in the 2021 Sky Demon pilot’s survey, Sandown was ranked as the UK’s favourite airfield.
Sandown has been faithfully recreated by Burning Blue Design, undertaking on-site visits to ensure the highest levels of accuracy. It features:
- Over 90 custom 3D objects each with full Physical Based Rendering (PBR) textures.
- Based on March 2024 layout.
- Full custom night lighting.
- Animated hangar doors which close at night.
- Animated Black Arrow rocket which lowers at night.
- Completely custom windsock.
- Animated spectators who leave at night.
- Real-life Surrounding scenery has been added as visual reference points:
- The industrial estate to the North-West of the Airport which includes the businesses ICRTouch, Airframe Assemblies, A M Structures.
- Cheverton Copse Holiday Park
- High resolution colour corrected ground textures taken from Bing maps and manipulated for consistency and realism.
