The name "Santa Maria" is a reference to the river channel of the same name opened in 1902 that had the purpose of interconnecting the Poxim and Vaza-Barris rivers. This river channel runs to the bottom of the airport, separating it from the Santa Maria complex.
As of 2015, Aracaju International Airport is undergoing a new phase of renovation.
