With it's 3000m (9843ft) Runway, the airport is home of various activities like General and Commercial aviation but also The Sojo University Flight school and the Kumamoto Prefecture Disaster Relief Aviation Center as well as military with the JGSDF Vice-Camp Takayubaru. Following the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake which severely damaged the airport, Kumamoto International Airport Co. , Ltd. began developing a new terminal building which was planned to withstand strong earthquakes. It was also made to integrates both domestic and international flights. The new terminal building officially opened on March 23, 2023.
