Washington, D. C. , was established in 1791 as the newly designated capital of the United States, strategically located along the Potomac River. President George Washington appointed French-born architect Pierre (Peter) Charles L’Enfant to design the city, drawing inspiration from the grand urban layouts of European capitals such as Paris, Amsterdam, Karlsruhe, and Milan.
