Grumman G-44A Widgeon
The G-44A is an American high-wing, twin-engine, amphibious light aircraft produced by the Grumman Aerospace Corporation. nnIn the late 1930s, Grumman envisioned a smaller version of its G-21 Goose, which had proven successful as a business transport aircraft. Called the Widgeon, the prototype of the aircraft first flew in July of 1940, intended for the civil market. World War II intervened, however, and the production aircraft entered service for the militaries of the United States and Britain.... The G-44A, with seating for six including the pilot, quickly became well-known as a reliable, durable machine eminently capable of operation from both land and water, notably in austere and remote areas like those of Alaska. nnThe Widgeon is driven by two wing-mounted Ranger 6-440-C5 six-cylinder engines that each produce 200 horsepower. The airplane has a maximum speed of 160 miles per hour, a climb rate of 1,750 feet per minute, and a ceiling of 18,000 feet above sea level. nnA classic gem in the history of aviation, the Grumman G-44A Widgeon allows pilots to access the sky from either land or water, and do so confidently. From inside the cockpit of the burly machine, aviators can launch into the heights from a modern airport, then touch down on a river deep in the backcountry, then leap again into the air from the shore. A go-anywhere craft, the Widgeon provides one of the rarest opportunities to be found in the world of aviation, one that combines piloting with exploration.

A highly modified Model 10 E was made famous by Amelia Earhart who tragically disappered during a round-the-world record attempt. The Electra is so evocative of the 30's and 40's and appeared in many movies, carrying Humphry Bogart to some distant Pacific island or later battling... When designer Reginald J Mitchell died of cancer in 1937, although having seen the prototype take to the air the previous year, little could he have known just how much influence his brilliant design for "an all-metal monoplane, eight-gun fighter" would have on the outcome of the Second World War.
Spitfires fought from the earliest days of the War right through to its close in both the European and Pacific theatres and continued to serve with distinction through more conflicts to come al... Spitfires fought from the earliest days of the War right through to its close in both the European and Pacific theatres and continued to serve with distinction through more conflicts to come all the way to the 1960s.
But it was in the darkest days of 1940, when Britain was on the back foot following a disastrous campaign in France, the following evacuations from Dunkirk and the consequential "Battle of Britain" that Mitchell’s graceful little fighter really proved its mettle.
Alongside the venerable Hawker Hurricane, its stablemate in many RAF squadrons of the day, pilots flew the Spitfire into battle all throughout each day of the long hot summer of 1940.
In this simulation you will find examples of Mk1As which fought in the “Battle of Britain” piloted by some of that battle’s "aces".
You'll also find a faithful recreation of N3200 - QV one of "The Dunkirk Spitfires" unearthed from the Normandy beaches where she had lain since 1940 and restored to perfection and flying condition today.
We will take you through all the necessary steps needed to fly a Spitfire, point out some of the design’s unique features and get you as close as possible to feeling what it would have been like to fly this incredible aeroplane.
