It is the fourth most important airport in the country, after Simón Bolívar in (Vargas-Maiquetía), La Chinita in (Maracaibo) and Santiago Mariño in (Porlamar),1 and is the main airport in the Central Region of Venezuela. It has a privileged location, being in the north of South America, which allows easy access to international markets; it is located in the Industrial Zone of Valencia, considered one of the most important manufacturing complexes in Venezuela, making it a determining factor for its development as one of the main airports in the Region. More than 60% of the air cargo handled in Venezuela is handled by this airport, making it the main cargo airport in the country, while the rest of the air cargo is distributed mainly between Maiquetía and La Chinita, and other less important airports. It is connected to the main national road network of the country, the Autopista Regional del Centro, seven minutes away, and is located just two and a half hours from the capital of the Republic and thirty minutes from Puerto Cabello (main port in the Venezuelan Caribbean).
History
Arturo Michelena International Airport was inaugurated on September 29, 1986, under the mandate of President Jaime Lusinchi and Governor Oscar Celli. It is one of the most important in Venezuela and serves the urban area of Valencia and the state of Carabobo. The first official flight was made by a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 aircraft from Aeropostal (El Margariteño) The “Arturo Michelena” Airport has runways and ramps that meet the requirements as an International Airport. At this moment it is being remodeled and the taxiway to RWY 10 will be opened.
Infrastructure
It has 10/28 runways of 3000 m and 50 m wide ASPH-PCN-103. It also has runway lights and signaling signs in addition to the PAPI system
