This article explores the history, development, facilities, and the overall significance of Bacolod-Silay Airport. As a crucial hub connecting Negros Occidental to the rest of the country, this airport has played a pivotal role in fostering economic growth, tourism, and regional development.
Historical Evolution:
- The story of Bacolod-Silay Airport begins with the vision to elevate the region’s connectivity and accessibility. Before its establishment, Bacolod City relied on the old Bacolod City Domestic Airport, which became inadequate to meet the growing demands of air travel. The decision to construct a new airport was driven by the need for modern infrastructure that could accommodate larger aircraft and increased passenger traffic.
Inaugurated on January 17, 2008, Bacolod-Silay Airport represented a significant leap forward in terms of aviation facilities. The airport aimed not only to serve the immediate needs of Negros Occidental but also to position itself as a vital player in the nation’s air travel network.
Strategic Location and Accessibility:
- Bacolod-Silay Airport occupies a strategic location, situated in the municipality of Silay, approximately 15 kilometers northeast of Bacolod City. This prime location enhances its accessibility for travelers from Bacolod and neighboring areas, ensuring convenient transportation to and from the airport.
- The airport’s proximity to key tourist destinations such as the Ruins in Talisay, the Mambukal Mountain Resort, and the sugar plantations that dot the landscape contributes to its allure for both domestic and international tourists. Travelers arriving at Bacolod-Silay Airport find themselves immersed in the rich cultural and historical tapestry of Negros Occidental.
Infrastructure and Facilities:
- Bacolod-Silay Airport boasts modern infrastructure and state-of-the-art facilities designed to provide a seamless and comfortable travel experience. Some notable features include:
Terminal Building:
- The terminal building is a testament to contemporary design and functionality. Its spacious interiors accommodate the influx of passengers, ensuring a smooth flow from check-in to boarding.
Runway and Apron:
- The airport is equipped with a well-maintained runway and apron capable of handling various types of aircraft. This capability is crucial for facilitating both domestic and international flights.
Air Traffic Control Tower:
- The presence of an air traffic control tower underscores the airport’s commitment to safety and efficiency in air travel. The tower oversees the orderly movement of aircraft within the airport’s airspace.
