Focus and Limits
Instrument Simming 21st Century describes and explains advanced aviation knowledge needed for truly realistic instrument simulations. It applies to most aircraft, airports, airspaces, and simulators. It does not focus on any particular airport, aircraft, airspace, or simulator.
This manual is for home flight-simulation computer programs. It is based on real aviation laws, regulations, and procedures so home flight-simulation enthusiasts can maximize their enjoyment. Because some aspects of home flight-simulation games are not exactly like real-world aviation, some information in this book is not exactly like real flight. That is why Instrument Simming 21st Century is not intended for and should not be used for real-world flight or lessons. No liability is accepted for any misuse of this manual. – Bill Stack, author
Use Your Time Productively
Don’t lose valuable flight-simming opportunities searching the internet for flimsy freebies. Most are worth their cost. Ftldave says it best:
“YouTube is hit or miss. Sometimes there's great, informative content, other times the videos are useless and unintelligible. How much time do you want to spend searching for the former, how much time to waste with the latter? As is often said about open software, the same is true for this: It's free if your time has no value to you. ”
Flight simmers have trusted, benefitted, and enjoyed my instructional books since 1997.
Satisfaction Guaranteed
A lot of time and effort has been invested by me and others toward making a quality product that is useful to people. Any book with physical defects will be replaced at no cost. If you can show that the content of Instrument Simming 21st Century is not as described, your money will be refunded. If you find facts that you believe are in error, please let me know so I can evaluate them. – Bill Stack, Author

Enhanced Global Vegetation New
BBD Global Vegetation Enhancement is a worldwide vegetation overhaul for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, built to make the world’s forests, towns, wetlands, grasslands, deserts, plantations, and seasonal landscapes look far more believable from the air.

T... BBD Global Vegetation Enhancement is a worldwide vegetation overhaul for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, built to make the world’s forests, towns, wetlands, grasslands, deserts, plantations, and seasonal landscapes look far more believable from the air.
Stock vegetation in MSFS 2024 often looks too uniform: the same tree heights, similar densities, generic city planting, abrupt seasonal changes, sparse broadleaf forests, and vegetation that does not always match the landscape below. This package rebuilds that experience with global biome-aware tuning across all 848 MSFS 2024 ecoregions.
This is not a simple “more trees” or “bigger trees” mod. It is a comprehensive global vegetation pass built from 358 XML files: 242 TreeSpecies, 34 PlantTypes, 61 GrassTypes, 7 CropSpecies, and 8 RockTypes.
Global Coverage
- 848 / 848 MSFS 2024 ecoregions covered using Microsoft/Asobo’s own local ecoregion names.
- Dedicated tuning for broadleaf forest, conifer forest, boreal taiga, rainforest, savanna, Mediterranean woodland, chaparral, desert scrub, tundra, wetland, mangrove, grassland, steppe, island biomes, plantations, and urban vegetation.
- Worldwide improvements across Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific islands, the Caribbean, and polar and alpine regions.
Realistic Height Banding
- Tree height is no longer one-size-fits-all. Species and variants are scaled to believable visual roles.
- Mature canopy trees such as oak, maple, beech, plane, eucalyptus, pine, larch, Douglas-fir, and tropical canopy species use larger height bands where they belong.
- Young trees, hedges, shrubs, tundra vegetation, orchard trees, and understory plants stay smaller, so they no longer appear as full-size forest trees.
- Urban trees are sized so towns are not filled only with tiny shrubs or oversized forest giants.
- Coastal, alpine, tundra, desert, wetland, and plantation variants use controlled size ranges that match their environment.
- Known outliers such as accidental super-tall broadleaf accents, undersized city trees, tiny broadleaf forests, and overgrown hedge variants have been audited and corrected.
Realistic Density Banding
- Closed forests are dense where they should be, including UK and European broadleaf woodland, Eastern North American deciduous forest, Pacific Northwest conifer forest, boreal taiga, rainforest, mangroves, and wetland forest.
- Open landscapes stay open: tundra, steppe, moorland, desert, xeric scrub, alpine grassland, dry savanna, and rocky island vegetation stay appropriately sparse.
- City density is tuned separately from countryside, so towns, parks, streets, suburbs, industrial edges, and coastal settlements do not all get the same treatment.
- Broadleaf forests received a field-tested density correction after in-sim testing showed deciduous canopies looking too thin from the air.
- Wetlands, mangroves, tropical forests, conifer towns, grassland towns, and Mediterranean settlements each use their own density assumptions rather than one global value.
Natural Species Grouping and Stand Patchiness
- Forests no longer rely on perfectly even species mixing. Spawn-ratio variation creates believable local patches and stands.
- Conifers can appear in groups rather than sprinkled evenly through broadleaf woodland.
- Broadleaf companions, plantation species, wetland trees, tropical canopy proxies, cultural landscape trees, and poplar avenues can form local pockets or rows.
- Distinctive species such as flowering trees, bamboo, palms, and cherry now cluster into believable groves rather than being scattered evenly across every tile.
- This reduces the “pepper pot” look where every tile holds the same tree recipe.
- UK and Atlantic, European, North American, East Asian, tropical, plantation, wetland, island, boreal, and PNV fallback rules all received patchiness passes.
Seasonal Change and Blossom
- Spring leaf-out is staggered globally. Deciduous trees no longer jump from bare winter branches to full green canopies in a single step.
- Different families leaf out at different times: willow and birch early, maple, poplar and plane through mid spring, and oak, beech, hornbeam, robinia and ginkgo later.
- Spring blossom is visible but restrained in the right city and countryside rules, including cherry, apple, hawthorn, almond, and ornamental flowering trees.
- Blossom timing is spread out, so flowering trees do not all bloom and fade at once.
- Autumn colour is staggered across species and variants, so whole regions do not turn at once.
- Seasonal fades use explicit durations, easing the abrupt March-to-April and autumn month-boundary jumps.
- Understory plants join in, with subtle spring green-up, late-season fade, dry-season stress, and wetland and forest-floor variation.
- Grass colour changes stay deliberately conservative to avoid clashing with MSFS terrain textures.
City and Town Vegetation
- Cities are no longer one global vegetation type. The package includes climate-aware city palettes for temperate, tropical, Mediterranean, boreal, arid, grassland, wetland, mountain, coastal, and conifer-town settings.
- Town density is raised where MSFS looked too sparse, including fixes prompted by field testing in Squamish, Edinburgh, Atlanta, and elsewhere.
- Urban canopy scale is improved, so cities carry proper street and park trees instead of only tiny ornamental shrubs.
- Street and parkland variety includes plane and sycamore, oak, maple, birch, Scots pine, cherry blossom, ginkgo, magnolia, jacaranda, palms, cypress, estate trees, and poplar accents.
- City ecoregions were audited and reassigned, so towns use vegetation that fits their real climate and landscape instead of generic stock planting.
Naturalised and Cultural Landscape Species
- Non-native species appear where they are realistic. Many real landscapes carry ornamental, plantation, estate, shelterbelt, or naturalised trees.
- Worldwide cultural accents include cherry blossom, Lombardy-style poplars, estate conifers, rhododendron, cherry laurel, hedgerows, and parkland trees.
- Global city ornamentals include Japanese maple, Japanese flowering cherry, magnolia, ginkgo, liquidambar, robinia, and Ailanthus.
- Plantation and agricultural proxies include radiata pine, eucalyptus, rubber, oil palm, tea, coffee, apple, almond, citrus, vineyard, orchard, and crop-stage vegetation.
- These stay low-ratio regional accents, not blanket replacements for native vegetation.
Wetlands, Mangroves and Riparian Areas
- Mangrove, swamp, marsh, reedbed, riparian, wet tropical edge, and water-edge rules are tuned apart from generic forest vegetation.
- Bald cypress, willow, mangrove, wetland shrub, and tropical wetland proxies get their own seasonal and density behaviour.
- Water-edge vegetation is patchier and less like a continuous wall of plants.
- Coastal and wetland species use careful altitude and placement limits.
Open Biomes: Deserts, Tundra, Steppe and Savanna
- Deserts remain deserts. Sparse cactus, yucca, date palm, tamarisk, arid shrub, and open scrub appear where they belong, without over-foresting dry regions.
- Tundra and alpine zones stay low and sparse, with dwarf birch, willow, heath, sedge, and cold-climate shrub structure.
- Savannas and grasslands get believable scattered-tree behaviour, with acacia, baobab, mopane-style proxies, steppe shrubs, shelterbelts, and wet and dry transition variety.
- Open-country patchiness keeps every tile from looking like the same sparse recipe.
Crop, Orchard and Plantation Detail
- 7 CropSpecies are included: wheat, corn, rice, cotton, sorghum, rapeseed, and lucerne.
- Crop lifecycle stages cover young, adult, mature, harvested, dormant, stubble, and regrowth.
- Orchard, vineyard, tea, coffee, oil-palm, rubber, eucalyptus, radiata pine, apple, almond, and citrus proxies fill out cultural landscapes and plantation regions.
- Crop and plantation vegetation appears only where it is regionally plausible.
What You Will Notice In Flight
- UK and Western Europe: fuller broadleaf woodland, better seasonal transitions, visible but restrained blossom, hedgerows, Scots pine pockets, estate trees, and Lombardy-style poplars.
- Scotland and Scandinavia: less sparse conifer structure, more fitting Scots pine and boreal transitions, moorland understory, and better plantation-style grouping.
- Pacific Northwest: denser coastal conifer towns and forests, with Douglas-fir, red alder, maple, cottonwood, and wet conifer influence.
- Eastern North America: richer deciduous forest density, improved spring and fall colour timing, blossom accents, and more varied town planting.
- Tropics: richer rainforest, plantation, island, wetland, tropical city, palm, flowering-tree, and dry-season variation.
- Deserts and tundra: sparse areas stay correctly open, but with better low shrub, cactus, heath, sedge, palm, and dry scrub variety.
- Cities worldwide: better tree density, better canopy scale, less generic planting, and more regional ornamental character.
- Tree species clump together more. Evergreens in the UK, for example, tend to form their own mini-forests rather than being randomly seeded.
- Emergent trees: an occasional larger-than-normal tree appears, making the forest canopy and skyline far less homogeneous.

Larnaca Airport was hastily developed towards the end of 1974 after the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey on 20 July of the same year, which forced the closure of Nicosia International Airport. The site on which it was built (near the Larnaca Salt Lake) had been previously used as an airfield in the 1930s and, subsequently, as a military installation by British forces. Larnaca International opened on 8 February 1975, with only limited infrastructure facilities and a prefabricated set of buildings comprising separate halls for departures and arrivals. The first airlines to use the new airport were Cyprus Airways, using Viscount 800s leased from British Midland, and Olympic Airways, using NAMC YS-11s. Initially, the runway at Larnaca International was too short for jet aircraft
Features:
High resolution ground textures
High resolution building textures

Pilot Journey - Career Add-on New
Your last flight should still matter tomorrow.
You fly a beautiful approach into a difficult airport. You grease the landing. And then? Nothing remembers it. The next session starts from zero, in a different aircraft, going nowhere in particular.
Pilot Journey fixes that. It is a career add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 that runs beside the simulator and turns every flight you make into part of one continuous career. You keep flying in MSFS exactly as you do now... Your last flight should still matter tomorrow.

Pilot Journey fixes that. It is a career add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and 2024 that runs beside the simulator and turns every flight you make into part of one continuous career. You keep flying in MSFS exactly as you do now. Pilot Journey builds everything around it.
EVERY FLIGHT LEAVES A MARK
• REAL WORK, NOT RANDOM MISSIONS. Take generated charter contracts anywhere in the world, or fly ordered airline rotations with assigned aircraft, deadlines, passengers and payouts.
• THE OPERATION GOES LIVE WITH YOU. Route progress, flight phase, fuel, weather and telemetry stay in front of you while you fly, read straight from the simulator.
• AN AUTOMATIC DEBRIEF THAT READS THE WHOLE FLIGHT. Your 0-100 score combines landing quality and on-time arrival, then applies any overspeed or stall-warning deduction recorded from the simulator.
• YOU EARN ACCESS, NOT POINTS. Money, miles, reputation and ratings decide which contracts and airline seats you actually qualify for. A bad month closes doors. A good one opens them.
• CLIMB FROM SINGLE PISTON TO SUPERSONIC. Nine licence tiers, class ratings, aircraft-specific type ratings, and new and used aircraft markets that make owning an aircraft a career decision instead of a dropdown.
• YOUR AIRLINE TALKS BACK. A career inbox delivers dispatch briefings, schedule changes, recognition, warnings and decisions that belong to your career and nobody else's.
• ONE PERMANENT RECORD. Logbook, finances, reputation, licences and airline history stay connected across every session.
A WORLD BIG ENOUGH TO DISAPPEAR INTO
9,685 airports. 11,387 runways. 17,994 radio frequencies. 231 airline profiles. 158 aircraft variants. The same reference data that lets you search the world also generates your routes, your contracts, your fleet requirements and your next opportunity.
PUT THE CAREER CONSOLE WHERE YOU WANT IT
• WINDOWS, SAME PC. Pilot Journey and MSFS on one machine, connected directly through SimConnect.
• WINDOWS, DUAL PC. Run the career console on a second computer. Pilot Journey Bridge relays live telemetry over your local network, so nothing competes with the simulator for resources.
• MACOS CAREER CONSOLE. Run the console on your Mac while Bridge connects to MSFS on the Windows simulator PC. Full live telemetry, on Apple hardware.
SimBrief is optional. Connect it and your OFP, filed route, schedule, cruise level, fuel figures and alternate drop straight into the briefing.
ONE LICENCE. NOTHING HELD BACK.
No mission packs. No airline tiers. No telemetry sold separately. No subscription. One purchase unlocks the complete Pilot Journey v1 career experience, and every v1 update is included.

Give every flight a reason to exist.
Flight Horizon is a career companion that sits beside MSFS 2020 and turns free flight into an owner-pilot charter operation. You name the company, choose a home base, buy a light aircraft, and take real people — and freight — from A to B. How you fly matters: smoothness, weather, boarding, and the landing all feed passenger happiness, which feeds pay, reputation, and the next contract.
It is not a shared online airline. There is no monthly fee and no MMO economy. Your career lives on your PC. You fly whatever you load in the sim; Flight Horizon owns the jobs, the money, the hangar, and the story around the flight.
A Windows companion is the ops desk. An in-sim toolbar panel keeps the loop in the cockpit. Mock Sim lets you learn the career with the sim closed; Live MSFS hooks SimConnect when you are ready to fly for real.
The career
You start as a Student Charter operator on local hops and short scenic loops. Reputation and hours unlock the ladder:
- Student Charter (STU) — local hops and sightseeing (up to about 150 nm; scenic loops shorter)
- Private Charter (PPL) — longer range, Cargo Lite, challenge jobs, longer scenic work
- Commercial Light (CPL) — priority and medical charters
- Senior Charter (SEN) — six-seat aircraft on the market
- Airline Charter (ATPL) — multi-leg tour contracts
Each rank is earned, not bought. Hour gates can be left at the defaults (10 / 40 / 100 / 250 hours) or set in Settings if you want a slower or faster career.
Cash, reputation, airborne hours, fleet condition, and the ledger persist between sessions.
The job board
Contracts are generated from real airport geography, not a fixed mission list. Refresh the board whenever you want a new day’s work.
Job types (unlocked as you progress):
- Air taxi — the bread-and-butter passenger hop
- Sightseeing — scenic loops with paying passengers
- Cargo Lite — freight, no passengers
- Challenge — higher risk, danger money if you fly the required approach well
- Priority — time-sensitive charters, better pay
- Medical — patient transfer; the airframe has to be in decent condition
- Multi-leg — tour contracts once you hold Airline Charter
Each contract shows estimated net pay, weather (VFR day, VFR night, IFR), urgency, required approach, and payload. Filter by this airport for continuous legs, or by approach: Any, VFR, non-precision, or ILS.
Open a full briefing before you accept: route, payload, scheduled depart time, origin and destination notes. Incoming charters also ring the company phone — unsolicited offers that land in the inbox and on the board.
Accept a job and it locks to the hangar aircraft you took it on. You fly that type. Cancel if you must — it costs reputation.
Night VFR is not flavour text. When you start the job flight, Flight Horizon can set the sim clock to the scheduled local departure.
Dispatch, cabin, and the flight
A typical live sortie:
- Accept the contract
- Optional SimBrief OFP (username in Settings; SID/STAR can import into the plan)
- Exterior walk-around — eight items; camera can jump outside or into the cockpit
- Boarding — timed, with a live seat map, personalities, and happiness
- Fly the route in MSFS
- Arrival auto-completes when you are at the destination with brake or door (optional)
- Debrief — happiness, touchdown, gross, tips, costs, danger money, reputation, cash
Passengers are the product. Happiness is not a pass/fail landing flag. It moves with the flight, and it moves the payout: poor trips pay less, excellent trips pay more and can add tips. Challenge jobs can add danger money when the approach matches and the cabin is still smiling.
Ground ops from the companion (live sim): parking brake, cabin door, pushback (left / straight / right), jetway or stairs, GPU, fuel truck with a cash-capped top-up. Divert mid-flight to a new ICAO if the day goes sideways. Open a passenger manifest when you want names on paper.
Optional cabin SFX and spoken crew PA follow boarding state. Career speed 1× / 2× / 4× shortens boarding, mock flights, and crew ETAs without touching the sim’s own rate.
Hangar and the market
Ownership is economic. You buy catalog types — C172-class, DA40-class, and six-seat airframes once you are Senior — or optionally pull in aircraft installed in your Community and Official folders.
The hangar tracks:
- Photos, seats, hours, condition
- Assigned crew
- Wear bands and “service soon / required”
- A maintenance reserve that accrues in the air and is spent when you pay for a service quote
- Sell price that follows condition
Rentals are available too: deposit, prepaid days, then daily rent. Return the aircraft and the deposit can take a hit if you brought it back tired.
Medical work will not go out on a wreck. If condition is too low, that contract stays on the ground.
Daily hangar, insurance, and crew wages come off automatically. The ledger is a proper cash book: credits in green, debits in red — payouts, fuel, landing, hangar, insurance, wages, hire fees, rent, cargo, sales.
Crew
Hiring unlocks at reputation 10. The board shows adverts with skill, wage, hire fee, and a generated resume — hours, types, employers, incident record, portrait.
Hire them, assign them to a rated hangar aircraft, or release them. Dispatch a hired pilot onto a board contract instead of flying it yourself. They appear on the Home live ops map, spawn as AI traffic in MSFS (or in Mock Sim), fly the route, and come home with payout, hours, and sometimes a license upgrade.
Cargo
Private Charter opens Cargo Lite jobs and the freight desk. Refresh standalone lots from home base, taxi into the pickup zone (~20 m, brake set), load, pay handling, and deliver at the destination for cash and reputation. Cargo Lite on a booked job can auto-load when boarding starts. In live MSFS, ramp cargo can spawn as world objects.
Home and the phone
The companion Home page is the ops snapshot: license ladder with aircraft glyphs, cash, reputation, hours, active aircraft and condition, maintenance reserve, flights logged, fleet value, and the live map of you and crew.
The phone is incoming charters only — unread badge, open to brief, mark one or all read. Toasts cover unlocks, walk-around complete, flight complete, daily costs, crew arrivals, wear, and live SimConnect.
In-sim panel
With the companion running, install the Community toolbar package and open Flight Horizon from the MSFS 2020 in-flight toolbar. The same loop is available in a browser at the local panel URL.
Panel pages: Home, Jobs, Dispatch, Cabin, Phone, Crew, Debrief, Status.
From the cockpit you can accept work, start the job flight, walk around, board, load the flight plan, trigger SimBrief, hire from adverts, take a rental, and read the debrief. Full hangar service, cargo desk, market, ledger, and settings stay in the companion — the panel is for flying the day, not running the company accounts.
Mock Sim and Live MSFS
Mock Sim — no simulator required. Scripted taxi, climb, cruise, and land so you can learn jobs, boarding, money, and crew without waiting on weather.
Live MSFS — SimConnect. Real telemetry (IAS, VS, altitude, fuel), plan load, clock set, cameras, ground ops, fuel quantity, cargo props, AI crew. If live fails, the companion can fall back to mock.
Switch from the sidebar whenever you want.

Who it is for
Pilots who want a charter company of their own: a job on the board, passengers who care how you fly, a hangar that wears out, crew you can send while you fly something else, and a panel in the cockpit so you are not alt-tabbing for every decision.
If you want a persistent shared world with other players, this is not that. If you want a reason to start the Cessna this evening and still have a company in the morning, this is.
