The airport was founded with the help of aviation enthusiasts who decided to build it in the territory of the city of Holíč. During the Second World War, it served as a reserve in Bažantnica near Kopčian in limited areas and in the possession of the army.
After the liberation in 1945, it again came under the administration of the city. One of the enthusiasts owns a meadow near the airport, which he made available to expand the airport and make it more functional. Thus, in 1947, the airport began to receive new life under the registration of the Slovak National Aeroclub. Together they bought 2 pieces of Piper L-4 aircraft and a school glider SG-38 Gleitr from the army surplus from the then UNRY. They built the first wooden hangar and clubhouse, where members of the aero club met.
In 1951, the aero club came under the Zväzarm army organization and aviation technology was expanded. They were Z 22 Junák, Z 381, Z-26, Z 126, Z 226 Trainer, biplane C-104, and gliders such as the German Kranich, Z-24 Krajánek, LG-125 Šohaj, VT-109 Pionýr and others.
At the beginning of 1954, the training of sports parachutists and the education of conscripts for military paratroopers began at the airport.
The oldest Aerotaxi station with Z-381 and Aero-45 aircraft was also established at the airport, serving nearby businesses as well as private passengers. A powdering station of Agrolet and Slov-Air was also built here for three surrounding districts. Today, the premises of the former Slov-Air are privately owned.
In the years 1960 to 1980, there was a big boom in the construction of hangars and buildings, and the aircraft park was expanding with new machines.
Currently, the airport is used by Aeroklub Holíč as well as by private aircraft owners who have their hangars built on the airport's area.
Airport basic data: RWY 04/22 - 1200 x 100 meters, ELEV. 162 m / 531 ft, FREQ - 123. 680

Construction to the terminal buildings, runways and air traffic control building started in 1950 and was officially opened in 1955. In 1973 the apron was extended to accommodate bigger aircraft and a new departures terminal was opened in 1980. The airport currently handles more than 1,2 million passengers per year, over 60 000 scheduled flights and over 800 tons of cargo. The cargo includes flowers, frozen lobster, meat, ostrich skins and mushrooms. The growth of tourism in the region, along with preparations for the 2010 football world cup, have required a number of improvements including a terminal expansion which can now handle up to two million passengers every year. This facility provides a central retail area as well as a fully compliant international arrivals and departures terminal to complement upgraded amenities for domestic traffic.

After the Second World War, when civil powered flight operations were permitted again in Germany from 1955, 28 enthusiastic motor pilots founded the Aero-Club Osnabrück in December 1955. After receiving approval in January 1959, the airfield was officially opened on 25 April 1959/
The airfield facilities were further expanded through the club members' own efforts without public funding. After the construction of the first hangars, the runway was extended to 800 metres and asphalted in 1980. In 1986 the tower was opened, followed by a new clubhouse in 1990.
The asphalt runway runs in an east–west direction (90°/270°) and is 800 metres long. The airfield houses a flight school as well as a catering business. The airfield is a so-called commercial airfield : a commissioner for air traffic control is employed full-time. The airfield can be approached all year round by gliders, aircraft up to 5. 7 t gross weight and helicopters.
Enjoy this superb airfield.

Welcome to the Rothenburg ob der Tauber EDFR commercial airfield, probably one of the most popular approach destinations for VFR pilots due to its beautiful location and the lovely old town of Rothenburg, which can be quickly reached by rental bikes.
The airfield is located at 1309 ft. which corresponds to 399 m, about 3 kilometres east of the town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
Starting in 1957, flying took place on the current site, which was then expanded into an airfield in 1960 and in the course of the 1960s, two hangars and a workshop were added. Originally, the runway was asphalted to 450m in the 70s, before it was extended to 600m and a tower was built. From 1980, the runway was given permission for customs and passenger handling, and in 2003 the runway was extended to just under 1000m.
Today the runway has dimensions of 950m x 20m asphalt with alignments RWY 03 and RWY 21, the runway round elevation is 2500ft. MSL (Main Sea Level).
The radio frequency is 126. 360 and the maximum take-off weight (MTOW) is 5700kg for all aircraft. The Aero Club Rothenburg o. d. T. e. V. is located at the airfield and has about 150 members in the field of powered flight, gliding and ultralight.
The airfield has several service buildings, a tower, six hangars and a restaurant. The fuel station contains JETA1 as well as AVGAS.
The special thing about Rothenburg is the approach, which takes place around a slope near the airfieldas a reward for a nice flight, you then borrow bicycles and experience a wonderful day in the historic district of Rothenburg, 3 km away.
- Buildings, restaurant, hangars and gas station at the airfield were modeled after the original - for this purpose the airfield was flown to in real and many detail shots were taken.
- Close cooperation with the airfield operator on site to create an atmosphere like in reality - special thanks to the local air sports club for drone shots of the airfield as well as the flight control.
- The approach sector was recreated in detail
- Original VFR charts and approach sheet from EDFR with the kind permission of the German Air Traffic Control.
